The four-door 2009 Mazda RX-8 gives enthusiasts more to love than ever with aggressive new styling front and rear, full-size seats for four, and a new, top-of-the-line R3 trim level that adds exclusive performance-enhancing details. Other trim level choices include the Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Producing 152 lb-ft of torque, the rear-wheel-drive Mazda RX-8 is powered by a 1.3L rotary engine that has 212 hp and redline of 7,500 rpm with the six-speed automatic transmission, while the six-speed manual transmission version is good for 232 hp and a redline of 9,000 rpm. EPA-estimated fuel economy stands at 16 mpg city/22 mpg hwy and 18 mpg in combined driving. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, front side airbags and front side curtain airbags, while stability control comes on all but the Sport trim level. As Mazda RX-8 photos depict, the coupe is equipped with a pair of rear-hinged "suicide" doors to the backseats. The base Sport features 18-inch wheels and performance tires, a rear lip spoiler on manual transmission trims, cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter.
The 2009 Mazda RX-8 offers a unique driving experience in the automobile world. Not only is the twin-rotor 1.3-liter RENESIS rotary engine the only one of its kind, but no other car in the class offers four doors. Add to the mix an attractive entry price, and the RX-8 easily competes with the Infiniti G35 coupe, Nissan 350Z coupe, and BMW 3-Series coupe.
For 2009, Mazda's RX-8 gets a restyling that is more 'evolution' than 'revolution.' The front fascia has been updated, with a deeper grille and more aggressive headlights, while the back end features larger exhaust pipes. Inside, the RX-8 gets new seats as well as a revised center console.
The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is the perfect compromise between a pure sports car and a sports sedan. The high-revving rotary engine sounds like nothing else, and the free-flow door system allows four adults easy access to the front and rear seats. The rear seat features a handy fold-down center section that allows long items like skis to extend from the trunk into the cabin.
