Unchanged for 2009, the Mercury Mountaineer is a midsize SUV available in trims accommodating either five or seven passengers. Engine offerings are a 210-hp 4.0L V6 with 254 lb-ft of torque and a 292-hp 4.6L V8 with 315 of torque. V6 Mountaineers come standard with a five-speed automatic transmission, while the V8 gets a six-speed automatic transmission. The V6 and V8 can be ordered with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. As for EPA estimated fuel economy, the RWD V6 is good for 13 mpg city/19 mpg hwy, while the AWD V6 gets 14/20; the RWD V8 achieves 15/21 but the AWD V8 drops to 14/19. Mercury Mountaineer standard safety equipment includes stability control with an extra roll stability control, antilock disc brakes and a full array of airbags. The Mountaineer ranks among the most spacious of the midsize SUVs, thanks to its fold-flat third-row seat, while those trims with a third-row seat are eligible for second-row captain's chairs, which drop passenger capacity to six.
The 2009 Mountaineer, considered a more stylish twin of the Ford Explorer, is a mid-sized SUV that can tow up to 6,960 pounds, almost double what most crossover SUVs can handle. It sports a 4-wheel independent suspension that performs exceptionally well on the highway and in the city. The Mountaineer stands out visually for its satin-aluminum finishes, distinctive Mercury waterfall grille in front and stylish interior trim. It earned the top rating of 'Good' in frontal offset crash testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It also earned numerous five of five stars for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
For 2009, the Mercury Mountaineer has changed little from 2008. Both the base trim with a V6 engine and the Premier trim are available. This year, side curtain airbags are new. The independent rear suspension sports improvements that increase handling and maneuverability.
Just as last year, the 2009 Mercury Mountaineer comes in two trims, Mountaineer and Mountaineer Premier. The base Mountaineer comes with a 210-horsepower, 4.0L V6 engine that also makes 254 pound-feet of torque, while the Premier comes with either the 4.0L V6 or a 292-horsepower, 4.6L V8 producing 300 pound-feet of torque. The V6 comes with a 5-speed automatic transmission, while the V8 gets a 6-speed automatic. Both the base model and Premier can be configured with either a standard rear-wheel drive or an optional road-oriented all-wheel-drive system.
