Redesigned last year, the five-passenger 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer sport sedan attracts fans with its aggressive persona and spirited performance. The DE and ES trim levels come with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produces 152 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, while the GTS packs a new 2.4L four-cylinder engine that is good for 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. Coming standard with a five-speed manual transmission, the Lancer offers a continuously variable automatic (CVT) transmission as an option. As for fuel economy, the 2.0L gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg city/30 mpg hwy and 24 mpg in combined driving with a manual transmission, and the 2.4L rates 21/28/23 with the manual transmission; however, the CVT constitutes no appreciable difference. Mitsubishi Lancer safety features include a full assortment of airbags, including front-seat side airbags, full-length head curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Antilock brakes are standard on the ES and GTS, and optional on the base DE, while the ES and GTS have four-wheel disc brakes, and the DE has rear drums.
The styling on Mitsubishi's 2009 Lancer sets it apart from the rest of the compact and subcompact sedan crowd, thanks to the flashy front nose and sleek yet upright profile. It's a good value for the money, and has a fashionable, comfortable interior to boot. Standard side air bags and options such as the digital music server also make it an attractive choice from a features standpoint.
The Mitsubishi Lancer, fresh of off last year's complete redesign, receives a new available 2.4L engine for 2009, along with a new ES-Sport trim that adds fog lights, a large rear spoiler, and front and side air dams. A Ralliart model, which replaces 2008's Lancer Evolution GSR, is expected to be released later in the model year.
The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer is available with two engine choices, with a third expected later in the model year on the Lancer Ralliart. The DE, ES, and ES-Sport Lancers are powered by a 152-horsepower, 2.0L four-cylinder engine (though the engine only makes 143 horsepower in California-emission states), while the GTS sports a bored-and-stroked version of the base engine. The resulting displacement on the GTS is 2.4L, with an output of 168 horsepower. Either engine can be mated to a five-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The CVT also features a Sportronic mode, which simulates six gears that can be selected using magnesium steering-wheel paddle shifters.
