The 2009 Saturn Sky sports car offers Bluetooth through OnStar and a revised special-edition trim featuring Ruby Red and Hydro Blue paint colors and 18-inch split-spoke wheels. The base Saturn Sky is equipped with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine producing 173 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque, while the upgraded Saturn Sky Red Line highlights a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine churning out 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive via a five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a five-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. The base Sky goes 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds, while the Red Line does that in 5.8 seconds. According to EPA estimates, fuel economy for the base Saturn Sky is 19 mpg city/28 hwy and 22 combined, while the Red Line still gets19/25/21. Standard safety equipment features stability control, antilock disc brakes and passenger-sensing airbag operation. OnStar turn-by-turn navigation is also available as an option on both the base and Red Line trims.
Saturn's Sky offers bold styling that GM hopes can lure buyers away from the popular Mazda Miata and Honda S2000. The Red Line offers as much horsepower as any other 2-seat convertible under $35,000, and produces enough punch to run with many roadsters that cost $10,000 more.
The Saturn Sky sees mostly cosmetic changes for 2009, though Bluetooth hands-free connectivity is now standard on the Sky Red Line and optional on the base model.
The Saturn Sky, which debuted for the 2007 model year, shares the same Kappa platform as the Pontiac Solstice. Standard features include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry and the usual power accoutrements. The Sky separates itself from its Pontiac sibling, the Solstice, by providing an added layer to the cloth convertible top for more noise attenuation and a revised suspension.
