For 2009, the 4-door Subaru Outback midsize wagon no longer offers the L.L. Bean trim, stability control becomes standard, and the 2.5i Special Edition Subaru Outback debuts, while all trims except the base 2.5i get a nine-speaker sound system. All-wheel drive as usual, Subaru Outback offers three engines: The 2.5i has a 2.5L H4 engine that commands 175 hp and 169 lb-ft of torque, the 2.5 XT Limited has a turbocharged H4 that grinds out 243 hp and 241 lb-ft of torque, and the 3.0 R Limited has a 3.0L H6 engine that churns out 245 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque. The 2.5i, 2.5i Special Edition and 2.5 XT Limited models have a choice of a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic; the 2.5i Limited and 3.0 R Limited offer automatic only. EPA fuel economy estimates yield 20 mpg city/26 mpg hwy and 22 mpg combined for the 2.5i; 18/24/20 mpg for the 2.5 XT, and 17/24/20 mpg for the 3.0 R. Standard safety equipment includes stability control, antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and front head restraints.
The 2009 Subaru Outback rides on a heavy-duty suspension with higher ground clearance, making it particularly adept at traversing rough roads, deep snow or anything else the outdoor adventurer may come across. True to its name, the Outback stands ready to face the elements both in form and function with exterior protective cladding and rugged styling cues. The Outback remains a compelling alternative to most wagons or sport-utility vehicles, with a low center of mass for safer handling and better maneuverability, while the interior is quite spacious and flexible enough to suit a small family.
For 2009, the Subaru Outback concentrates on improving safety with its standard VDC stability control system, enhancing style with an expanded exterior color palette and tinted privacy glass and increasing comfort with steering wheel mounted audio controls for the premium Harman Kardon sound system. Also, Subaru introduces another trim level with the 2.5i Special Edition and says goodbye to the L.L. Bean Moniker.
Versatility abounds with Subaru's 2009 Outback. It starts with the expansive exterior color palette and extends to the myriad of interior comfort and convenience options available. In addition, it also boasts 3 different engine types based on trim level. The 2.5i and 2.5i Special Edition are powered by a 169-horsepower, 2.5L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. The automatic comes with Subaru's SPORTSHIFT manual control. The 2.5i Limited edition is powered by the same 4-cylinder engine but is only available in the automatic transmission. The sporty 2.5 XT Limited gets a 243-horsepower, 2.5L turbocharged flat-four with 5-speed manual or optional 5-speed automatic transmission and the 3.0 R gets a smooth, 245-horsepower 3.0L flat 6-cylinder with 5 speed automatic transmission.
