No longer called the Rabbit, the 2010 Volkswagen Golf is totally redesigned for the new model year. The five-passenger compact hatchback is available with two doors or four. The standard engine is a 170 hp 2.5L five-cylinder engine paired with either a five-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. New this year is the inclusion of a TDI model which is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine. The TDI can be linked to a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG gearbox. The TDI has an impressive EPA fuel economy rating of 30 mpg in the city and over 40 mpg on the highway.

After a brief hiatus, the popular Golf returns to Volkswagen's lineup for 2010, replacing the Rabbit as VW's compact hatchback. It's available in both 2- and 4-door models, with power coming from either a 2.5L inline-5 cylinder or a 2.0L turbo direct-injection diesel (TDI). Meanwhile, the sporty GTI, also available in 2- and 4-door-trim, draws its 200 horses from VW's venerable 2.0L turbocharged inline-4. Prices start at $17,490 for the Golf, $23,489 for the GTI

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
