Revised in 2008, the 2011 Audi A4 is a compact executive sport sedan and is also available in a wagon body style. Both versions are powered by a 2.0-liter, 211-hp Turbo I4, with your choice of a 6-speed manual, 6-speed Tiptronic automatic or continuously variable transmission. Power is put to the ground with standard front-wheel drive or optional Quattro all-wheel drive. Fuel economy with the CVT is up to 23/30 mpg city/hwy while 5-passengers are treated to a sophisticated and luxurious interior, optional Bang & Olufsen audio, Bluetooth, integrated music, NAV, vehicle controls and a comprehensive airbag system. All of these qualities make the A4 a high-value sport sedan with a fun-to-drive personality. Competitors include BMW 3-series and Mercedes C-class.

Model Review

The A4 is available as a 4-door sedan or as a 5-door station wagon, dubbed the Avant. Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which delivers 211 horsepower and 258 ft-lb of torque. A new 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission are available on quattro models, while front-drive models receive a continuously variable transmission (CVT) as standard equipment. Audi claims the new compact 8-speed is smoother and more precise than the outgoing 6-speed auto while returning better fuel economy.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
