With its sporty demeanor, the 2011 BMW X5 continues as the brand's "Sport Activity Vehicle" featuring all-weather capability and sporty handling and style. Starting off is the 35i trim, powered by a 3.0-liter 260-hp I6, 6-speed automatic and up to 15/21 mpg city/hwy. Upgrade to the 35d for a 3.0-liter twin-turbo diesel I6, with 425-lb ft tq. and up to 26 mpg hwy. The top of the line 50i features a 4.8-liter, 350-hp V8 with 14/19 mpg city/hwy. All X5s are equipped with an excellent all-wheel drive set up with on road handling and performance in mind. BMW's X5 offers seating for seven with high-tech on- and off-road capabilities. And with all-new styling as well as a host of refinements for 2011, the package has become even tighter. Although it ranks among the more expensive SUVs in its class, it's a strong competitor, offering a wide range of options not found on the Acura MDX, Lexus RX 350 or Mercedes-Benz M-class.

What's new for 2011?

Revised styling is the most obvious change for BMW's X5 in 2011, with new LED-equipped headlamps, a new front bumper with a new metallic lower trim panel, and revised fog lamp mounting. The rear bumper has been redesigned to match the front, and new chrome-trimmed taillights feature LED lights. Underneath that, the X5 gets several new powerplants for 2011, including a 3.0L turbocharged inline 6-cylinder that makes 300 horsepower, as well as a 4.4L V8 that produces 400 horsepower. Both engines get an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission. Other new features include active cruise control and a lane departure warning system. New colors include Deep Sea Blue, Platinum Grey and Sparkling Bronze.

Launched in 1999, the X5 is BMW's flagship mid-size SUV, or as BMW calls it, a SAV, or Sport Activity Vehicle. From the very beginning, BMW worked hard to make sure that sporty driving dynamics and a high level of responsiveness were programmed into the package, which added not only a great deal of utility, but with BMW's standard all-wheel drive system, a sure-footed nature in a variety of terrains. Add to that BMW's trademarked build quality and luxury, and you have a versatile vehicle that's well-placed at the top of its class. Three trims are available, starting with the xDrive35i, the xDrive50i, and the diesel-powered xDrive35d. A high-performance X5 M model is also available.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
