Introduced in 2009, the 2011 BMW X6 M is a cross between a sport coupe and an SUV. The X6 M features a 555-hp 4.4-liter V8 with twin-turbocharging, a first for any M division vehicle. Putting the power to the ground is a 6-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission linked to an xDrive all-wheel drive system. This 5000-lb machine roars from 0 to 60 in the mid 4 second range and handles corners with surprising stability and control. What's new for 2011?

For 2011, the 35i is outfitted with a new single-turbo, 6-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. This engine is the same that is available for the BMW 335is, 740i and 740iL. All but the hybrid X6 now come with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid powertrain utilizes a 7-speed automatic.

Model Review

The X6 for 2011 is offered with a choice of three powertrains. The 35i features a turbo-charged 6-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower. The 50i utilizes an all-new 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine capable of 400 horsepower. The hybrid X6 combines the 4.4L V8 with an 84-horsepower electric motor and battery pack, which BMW calls 'ActiveHybrid'. The 35i and 50i X6s come with an all new 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual shift mode and steering wheel paddles. The hybrid uses a 7-speed version of the Steptronic transmission.
