Since its introduction in 2009, the 2011 BMW X6 has helped push the envelope in this recent niche segment. The 35i trim level is available with a newly announced single twin-scroll turbo 3.0-liter 300-hp I6 linked to an 8-speed automatic, helping to achieve up to�15/20 mpg city/hwy. What's new for 2011?

For 2011, the 35i is outfitted with a new single-turbo, 6-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. This engine is the same that is available for the BMW 335is, 740i and 740iL. All but the hybrid X6 now come with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid powertrain utilizes a 7-speed automatic.

Model Review

The X6 for 2011 is offered with a choice of three powertrains. The 35i features a turbo-charged 6-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower. The 50i utilizes an all-new 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine capable of 400 horsepower. The hybrid X6 combines the 4.4L V8 with an 84-horsepower electric motor and battery pack, which BMW calls 'ActiveHybrid'. The 35i and 50i X6s come with an all new 8-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual shift mode and steering wheel paddles. The hybrid uses a 7-speed version of the Steptronic transmission.
