The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500 has been upgraded inside and out helping to gain the lead in the latest round of heavy-duty pickup wars. Eleven different configurations are available and all feature a new stronger and lighter fully-boxed frame which houses a 360-hp 6.0-liter Vortec V8 and 6-speed automatic. Optional is GM's improved 6.6-liter Duramax turbo diesel with a class leading 397-hp and 765-lb ft of torque channeled through a strengthened Allison 1000 6-speed automatic. These powertrain improvements combined with stronger and lighter suspension components have improved hauling and towing capability while increasing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Other features include a bold new grille, 20-inch wheels, a new exhaust brake, mobile WiFi, Bluetooth connectivity and extended cab models that feature 170-degree rear opening doors. Main competitors include Ford F-250 Super Duty and Ram 2500 Heavy Duty.
The Silverado range perennially continues to be one of GM's biggest sellers. This means GM continually works hard to innovate and improve the truck's design. As a result, the consumer wins--whether hauling equipment to a job site, working a farm or towing a boat, the Silverado 2500 and 3500 are built for tough work, and are some of the best-designed trucks available from any manufacturer. Made in either short or long bed form, with 2- or 4-wheel drivetrain, optional dual rear wheels and with a choice of several impressively powerful engines, the Silverado can be set up do just about anything asked of it. The 2500, even simply configured, is capable of towing over 10,000 pounds and base prices start around $25,000.
For 2011, the Silverado HD line gets several updates, including greater towing and payload capacities as well as an all-new chassis. A new front bumper and grille have also been fitted. New 18- and 20-inch wheels are available on single rear wheel models. The base 6.0L V8 returns largely unchanged, while the 6.6L Duramax diesel now delivers 397 horsepower and an impressive 765 pound-feet of torque. 3500 models are rated to tow up to 20,000 pounds and have a payload capacity of just over 6,300 pounds--all while delivering an 11 percent increase in fuel efficiency. Both the 2500 and 3500 are still available in a multitude of configurations to suit every work or play application imaginable.
The 2500 and 3500 come with a 6.0-liter V8 engine standard, though a 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 is available. All Silverados come with a heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2500 and 3500 can be had as either a regular, extended or crew cab, with a standard or long bed, and with either a 2- or 4-wheel drivetrain. Dual rear wheels are available on some models. There are three trim levels, WT, LT and LTZ.
