Undergoing a massive visual and mechanical makeover, the Ford Explorer departs the truck-based construction for a more modern crossover vehicle frame. Sold in a base, XLT and Limited, the Ford Explorer varies in premium ranges. Superiorly powered by the 3.5 liter V-6 forcing out 290 horsepower and 255 pounds-feet of torque, the Explorer is either front-wheel drive or could be equipped with optional four-wheel drive. A budget-minded EcoBoost in-line four engine, Explorer is also available as front-wheel drive only. Both engines are mated with 6-speed automatic transmissions. Fuel economy for 3.5 liter V-6 is 17 city/25 highway while the four-cylinder engine will be approximately a 1 mile per gallon improvement. Standard interior convenience on the base Explorer includes power windows, power locks and four 12-volt power outlets seeking to indulge the cabin occupants. Optional 7-seat capacity, dual-panel moonroof and available Ford SYNC can be equipped. This premium-grade family hauler standard safety features includes Ford's MyKey, front row and side-impact airbags and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control.
While improving the quality, fuel economy, safety, and technology of the Explorer, Ford didn't forget that this is one of the company's best-selling SUVs. New this year is an intelligent 4-whel drive system that allows the driver to select for driving conditions, and it can tow up to 5000 pounds. The price has dropped for the 2011 Explorer-- its base price is $1000 less expensive than a similarly equipped 2010 edition.
The Explorer has been on the mid-sized SUV scene for nearly two full decades and has come to define the segment. The Explorer gets a thorough revision for 2011, with more fuel-efficient engines, a weight-saving design, the addition of advanced safety systems and a strong slate of technology equipment.
The standard Explorer engine is a 3.5L V6 that makes 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, front-wheel drive and a 6-speed transmission. Ford's 2.0L EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine is available, which makes 237 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. Ford claims that this engine delivers V6 power with 4-cylinder fuel economy and expects mileage to be as much as 30 percent better than last year's.
