The 2011 MAZDA3 is an entry level compact available as a 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback. Engine choices for the sedan are 2.0/2.5-liter 4-cylinder engines that produce 148/167 hp and 135/168 lb-ft of torque, the latter being the only available engine in the hatchback trim. The 2.0-liter engine is available with a 5-speed manual/automatic transmission while the 2.5-liter comes with a choice of a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Both the sedan and hatchback are only available in FWD and get an EPA estimated 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with the optional automatic transmission available with the 2.5-liter engine. For those keen on gas mileage, the 2.0-liter engine with the standard manual transmission will deliver an EPA estimated 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. The Tech Package, available in both trims, includes bi-xenon headlights, adaptive front-lighting system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, LED taillights, advanced keyless entry, push-button start, and compact navigation with full-color display. The MAZDA3 is eligible for an extended protection plan up to 10 years/100,000 miles.

Model Review

The MAZDA3 is powered by a choice of two different 4-cylinder engines. Base MAZDA3 i models feature an economical 2.0-liter engine making 148 horsepower, while sportier MAZDA3s models get a 167-hp, 2.5-liter engine. Both engines make slightly less power in California-emissions states. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on 3i models, but sporty 3s models step up to a 6-speed manual. A 5-speed automatic is available with either engine. The 2.0-liter gets quite good fuel economy figures of 24 mpg city, 33 highway with the manual transmission, while the s model is rated at 21 city and 29 highway.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
