A mid-size luxury liftback with advanced AWD, the 2012 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is available with two different engines; a standard 3.0-liter inline V6 engine that produces 300 hp and an optional 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 400 hp. Both engines utilize an 8-speed automatic transmission and double-wishbone multi-link front suspension. Fuel mileage falls within an EPA estimated range of 15 mpg city to 28 mpg highway, depending on engine selection. Features include adjustable rear seats, xenon adaptive headlights, iPod/iPhone integration, 7-speaker HD audio system, brake energy regeneration, active cruise control, night vision with pedestrian recognition, active blind-spot detection, and multi-view camera display. Safety is comprised of anti-lock braking, advanced airbags, emergency brake assist, stability control, traction control, brake drying, and tire pressure monitoring. The 5 Series Gran Turismo is backed by a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.
The 5-Series lineup of models offers athletic and surefooted sedans that also offer a surprising level of comfort inside. Technology is also a strong point in the 5-Series, with performance and safety standouts such as Active Steering, Active Roll Stabilization and a night vision system. The 5-series Grand Turismo Wagon is a very fashionable and fun-to-drive alternative to a sport-utility vehicle.
Following a significant redesign last year, the BMW 5-series enters 2012 largely unchanged, though the 528i replaces its inline-6 with a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder, which produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The unit is mated to an 8-speed automatic. BMW xDrive is also now available on the 528i.
For 2012, the BMW 5-Series is offered with three different engines--designated by the models 528, 535 and 550. A 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder is standard on 528 models; 535 models get a turbocharged 3.0l six. A twin-turbo 4.4L V8 engine making 407 horsepower powers the 550. All three models are offered with rear-wheel or xDrive all-wheel drive. The 535 and 550 models come with a standard 6-speed manual transmission, while the 528 is offered with a new 8-speed automatic transmission with taller overdrive gears aimed at offering higher fuel economy. The 5-Series also includes BMW's Brake Energy Regeneration system, which charges the battery when the car is decelerating or braking, rather than running the alternator all the time.
