One of the top-selling vehicles in the whole General Motors line-up, the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado is defined with four powerplants and three cab styles. On regular and extended cab models, the 2012 Chevrolet also has a choice of a 6-foot standard box or 8-foot long box bed size. Coming in Work Truck, LS, LT, XFE or LTZ trim levels, common features found on all 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks include front and side airbags, air conditioning as well as dual 12-volt power outlets. XM Satellite radio, OnStar, Bluetooth connectivity and cruise control are available features on the 2012 Silverado. Multiple engine options are available with the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado. A 195 horsepower, 4.3 liter V-6 engine is found on the base Work Truck model fitted with a four-speed automatic transmission. Optional on the Work Truck but standard on LS and LT models of the 2012 Silverado, a 4.8 liter Vortec V-8 powerplant produces 302 horsepower. A 5.3 liter and a top of the line 403 horsepower, 6.2 liter V-8 engine are also available powerplant choices. The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado V-8 engine line-up is FlexFuel capable for running E85 blended gasoline. All powerplants can be matched with either rear wheel or four-wheel drivetrains.

What's new for 2012?

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 full-size pickup receives few notable changes for 2012. Several small styling tweaks have been made, including a new split grille and a new aerodynamic front bumper for LS and LT models without tow hooks. Two new trim packages are available: White Diamonds and Custom Sport Truck. New 20-inch chrome wheels are also available.

Model Review

Chevrolet continues to offer two completely different interiors for its Silverado 1500 family of pickups: Work Truck, LS and LT trims get a so-called 'pure pickup interior' that includes larger door handles and controls that are designed to be used with gloves on, while the LTZ trim gets a luxurious, softer and car-like interior. The LTZ instrument panel is a bit lower to afford a better outward view, and several special color and trim themes are offered with the LTZ exclusively.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
