A 139.6 inch long compact vehicle which has taken Europe by storm in 2007, the FIAT 500 is being released to the United States in Pop, Sport and Lounge trim levels for 2012. Well-loaded in base Pop trim, the 2012 FIAT 500 comes standard with remote keyless entry, tire-pressure monitoring system, electric power steering and cruise control. Power mirrors, rear liftgate spoiler and BLUE&ME handsfree communications is found on the FIAT 500 Sport model with unique interior pieces. On the FIAT 500 Lounge model, automatic temperature control, premium cloth seating and chromed mirrors differentiates from the other two trim choices. Optional items that can be ordered on the 2012 FIAT 500 includes a power sunroof, TomTom navigation system and a compact spare tire. Powered by a 1.4 liter MultiAir four-cylinder engine on all 2012 FIAT 500 models, either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission drives 100 horsepower to the front-wheels. Providing very sporty ride, maximum fuel economy is most impressive with 30 miles per gallon city and 38 miles per gallon highway obtainable. Trunk space for the compact 2012 FIAT 500 is rated at 9.5 cubic feet.

Model Review

FIAT's 500 for America delivers Italian panache with an enthusiastic punch. A standard 1.4L 4-cylinder engine delivers 101 horsepower. Not a lot of power, but the 500 weighs just over 2300 lbs. The car is front-wheel drive and comes with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and standard stability control.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
