The 2012 Ford F-150 is a full-size pickup truck available in 2-door, 4-door, regular and extended cab trim levels. Engine options consist of 3.7-liter V6 (302 hp/278 lb-ft of torque), 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 (365 hp/420 lb-ft of torque), 5.0-liter V8 (360 hp/380 lb-ft of torque), and a 6.2-liter V8 (411 hp/434 lb-ft of torque). Transmission choices include a standard 6-speed automatic and optional 6-speed SelectShift automatic. Fuel mileage for the standard RWD F-150 is an EPA estimated 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. What's new for 2012?

After several engine updates last year, the Ford F-150 receives only minor changes for 2012. Among them is a larger, 36-gallon fuel tank standard on all 4-wheel-drive EcoBoost F-150s, which increases range to 750 miles. A new FX appearance package is available on FX4 and FX2 models that includes black and red fender and tailgate badges, 20-inch black wheels, chrome exhaust tip, blacked out exterior trim and decals and a red-stitched steering wheel.

Model Review

There are four different engines offered on the F-150: a 302-hp, 3.7L V6; a 360-hp, 5.0L; a 411-hp, 6.2L V8; and a 365-hp, 3.5L turbocharged V6. All four come hooked to a 6-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode and they can be had with either 2- or 4-wheel drive. There are also several bed lengths as well as Regular, SuperCab and SuperCrew cab styles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
