Entering the year with few changes, the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck comes in regular, extended and a four-door crew cab. Within Work Truck, SL, SLE and SLT trim levels, the 2012 Sierra 1500 pickup comes standard with six airbags, air conditioning, dual 12-volt power outlets as well as StabiliTrak featuring Proactive Roll Avoidance. XM satellite radio, rearview camera, Universal Home Remote and a selection of 20-inch aluminum wheels are available with the 2012 GMC full-sized pickup truck. For premium appointments, the 2012 Sierra 1500 Denali comes standard with a chrome grille, 12-way power front leather bucket seats, heated mirrors, Rear Parking Assist and a Bose sound system. Powerplants choices for the 2012 Sierra starts 4.3 liter V-6 before upgrading to one of three Vortec V-8 engines. FlexFuel capable of running E85 blended gasoline, a 4.8 liter, 5.3 liter and a 403 horsepower 6.2 liter engine are offered with fuel economy between 15 to 17 miles per gallon. In crew cab version, there is also a 2012 GMC Sierra XFE model which is fitted with special final gearing to allow an additional highway mile to be achieved with the 5.3 liter V-8 engine. These engines are channeled through either a 4-speed or a 6-speed automatic transmission with the option of four-wheel drive.

Model Review

GMC continues to offer two completely different interiors for its Sierra 1500 family of pickups: Work Truck, SL and SLE trims get a so-called 'pure pickup interior' that includes larger door handles and controls that are designed to be used with gloves on, while the SLT trim gets the same luxurious, softer, and more carlike interior that's used in the GMC Yukon. The SLT instrument panel is a bit lower to afford a better outward view, and several special color and trim themes are offered with the SLT exclusively.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH.
