Arriving as either a regular, extended or crew cab configuration, the 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD is a lead performer in the �professional grade� segment of pickup trucks. Built on a rigid hydroformed box frame, the 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD rides on a heavy-duty suspension package suited to extreme chores that includes trailer towing. Optional items designed to improve the capabilities of the 2012 Sierra 250HD pickup truck includes automatic locking rear differential, back-up heavy-duty battery and an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller. Powerplant selection for the 2012 GMC 2500HD consists of either a gasoline or diesel fueled engine. Standard on the pickup truck is the Vortec 6-liter V-8 generating 360 horsepower and 380 foot-pounds of torque. The optional engine is the 6.6 liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 which is design to move rear or all four wheels with 765 pounds-foot of torque. Towing ability with the 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD sees up to 14,700 pounds available using the 6-liter V-8 engine and as much as 17,500 pounds of trailer pulling ability with the Duramax turbo-diesel engine.

Model Review

The 2500 and 3500 come with a 6.0L V8 engine standard, though a 6.6L turbo-diesel V8 is available. All Sierras come with a heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2500 and 3500 can be had as either a regular, extended or crew cab, with a standard or long bed, and with either a 2- or 4-wheel drivetrain. Dual rear wheels are available on some models. There are four trim levels, Work Truck, SLE, SLT and Denali.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
