Completely redesigned for 2012, the Toyota Camry is a FWD mid-size sedan with seating for five. Engines choices include a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, 178 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, and optional 3.5-liter V6 engine that yields 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. Transmission options consist solely of a 6-speed automatic. Fuel mileage is improved, thanks to a reduced curbside weight, to an EPA estimated 25 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, for a combined average of 28 mpg. Features include integrated front fog lamps, 8-speaker sound system, voice-activated touchscreen navigation, heated outside mirrors, sport leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats and push button start. Safety is comprised of vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, smart stop technology, driver and front passenger advanced airbag system, seat-mounted side airbags, front/rear side-curtain airbags and direct tire pressure monitoring. What's new for 2012?

The 2012 Camry has been redesigned both inside and out. Although it rides on the same platform as 2011 models, it's been given all new bold-looking sheetmetal with a more aerodynamic style. The trunk is now larger, offering more storage space and all models feature 60/40 split folding rear seats, providing the ability to transport longer items. The Hybrid model features an updated 2.5L inline 4-cylinder engine and electric motor combination, which provides a total of 200 horsepower, up from last year's 188. The interior features increased headroom as well as hip and legroom, and the seats have been redesigned to be more comfortable.

Model Review

Toyota's Camry has been given a redesign for 2012, but Toyota didn't mess with success when it came to the fundamentals. It's still offered in both gas and hybrid versions and while styling changes have been made, it's still unmistakably Camry throughout. Buyers still have their choice of the base L, LE, sporty SE and top-level XLE models. Hybrid buyers can now choose between LE or XLE trims.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
