Now available in an all-new wagon trim, the 2013 BMW 3 Series is a compact entry-level luxury�vehicle offered in sedan, coupe, and convertible (hardtop) trim levels. All trims are available as a base 328i that utilizes a standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder twin-turbo charged engine that produces 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Sedan, coupe, and convertible trims offer an optional 335i trim powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 300 hp (convertible trim also offers a 335is trim that yields 320 hp.) An additional engine offered is an optional 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 diesel engine (335d) that produces 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. Transmission options consist of a 6-speed manual, 8-speed automatic, 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters, and a 7-speed double clutch automatic. All trims, with the exception of the convertible level, offer AWD. Features include premium sound, navigation, automatic cruise control, and iPhone/iPod integration. Safety is comprised of dynamic stability control, enhanced braking, advanced airbags, and xenon adaptive headlights. The 3 series is backed by a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.

The BMW 3-Series is a family of sporty sedans, wagons, coupes, and convertibles--all sized at what would be considered a compact car in the U.S. 2013 BMW 3-Series Sedans and Sports Wagon models are built on a new-generation (F30) platform that made its debut with the 2012-model sedan--and is slightly longer, lower, and wider, while Coupe and Convertible 3-Series models remain built on the previous platform. Across its entire lineup, the 3-Series models stand out for being athletic, responsive and fun to drive--as well as more fuel-efficient than most other alternatives. Also, last year's redesign brought more back-seat space and cargo space to sedans, as well as a more sophisticated, isolated ride. M3 models, meanwhile, continue to be one of the most practical high-performance cars on the market.

What's new for 2013?

BMW has updated its design lines in the 2013 3-Series. An M Sport Line is new and offered on either 328i or 335i models, bringing sport seats, M alloy wheels, a sport suspension, an aerodynamic package, 'hexagonal' interior trim, Shadowline exterior trim and an Anthracite-hued headliner. Modern Line 3-Series cars now come with an all-black upper dash and steering wheel to compliment Black Dakota Leather and Dark Oyster piping and Dark Pearl metallic trim replaces Pearl metallic trim. Sport Line models are now available with Fineline Anthracite wood trim, and both the Sport Line and M Sport Line now include a choice between all-season or performance tires.

Model Review

The 3-Series is offered in Sedan, Sports Wagon, Coupe and Convertible body styles, each with several potential powertrains. Most of the lineup is offered in 328i and 335i variants, with the 328i getting a new 240-horsepower, 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, while 335i versions offer a 300-hp, 3.0L turbo six. Both of these engines employ twin-scroll turbocharging for quick responsiveness as well as strong torque output just above idle--making them feel like much larger engines. New-generation 8-speed automatic transmissions help the Sedan and Sports Wagon models achieve excellent mileage, too--up to 33 mpg on the highway with the 335i Sedan or up to 34 mpg with the 328i Sedan. Coupe and Convertible versions have a 6-speed automatic available instead of the 8-speed (and a 230-hp six), but a 6-speed manual gearbox is also offered throughout the entire 3-Series lineup.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
