Refreshed for 2013, the Ford F-150 is a full-size pickup truck available in 2-door, 4-door, regular and extended cab trim levels. Engine options consist of 3.7-liter V6 (302 hp/278 lb-ft of torque), 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 (365 hp/420 lb-ft of torque), 5.0-liter V8 (360 hp/380 lb-ft of torque), and a 6.2-liter V8 (411 hp/434 lb-ft of torque). Transmission choices include a standard 6-speed automatic and optional 6-speed SelectShift automatic. For 2013 the Limited trim has been introduced and the Harley Davidson trim has been discontinued. Fuel mileage for the standard RWD F-150 is an EPA estimated 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Features include best-in-class towing/payload, trailer sway control, fully flat load floor, rearview camera, outboard-mounted rear shocks, in-cab storage, and optional supercrew rear seat. Safety is comprised of advanced airbags, anti-lock braking (ABS), safety cage, integrated trailer brake controller, roll stability control, and tire pressure monitoring (TPMS). The F-150 is backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Ford claims class-leading fuel economy, as well as best-in-class towing and horsepower for both its base V6 engine as well as both of the available V8s. Ford also says that it's the only automaker to offer a 6-speed automatic transmission across its entire model lineup. 2013 sees only minor changes to the F-150 lineup. A new grille is the most obvious external change. New HID headlights are much more powerful than the units they replace. SVT Raptor models get 'beadlock' wheels for 2013, providing extra insurance that the tires will stay stuck to the rims during serious off-roading.

Model Review

There are four different engines offered on the F-150: a 302-hp, 3.7L V6; a 360-hp, 5.0L; a 411-hp, 6.2L V8; and a 365-hp, 3.5L turbocharged V6. All four come connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode and they can be had with either 2- or 4-wheel drive. There are also several bed lengths as well as Regular, SuperCab and SuperCrew cab styles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
