Relatively unchanged for 2013, the GMC Sierra 2500HD is a heavy duty full-size pickup truck with a maximum towing capacity of 17,800 lbs. The Sierra 2500HD is powered by a 6.0-liter V8 engine that produces 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. For increased performance GMC offers a 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel V8 engine that yields 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque. Standard RWD and optional 4WD are paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Features include 22-inch wheels, hands-free phone capabilities, steering wheel mounted controls, rear vision camera, navigation and heated exterior mirrors. Safety is comprised of advanced airbags, StabiliTrak stability control system, anti-lock braking (ABS), and tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The Sierra 2500HD is backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Model Review

The 2500 and 3500 come with a 6.0L V8 engine standard, though a 6.6L turbo-diesel V8 is available. All Sierras come with a heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2500 and 3500 can be had as either a regular, extended or crew cab, with a standard or long bed, and with either a 2- or 4-wheel drivetrain. Dual rear wheels are available on some models. There are four trim levels, Work Truck, SLE, SLT and Denali.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
