Fresh off of last year's improvements, the 2013 Kia Soul is a compact hatchback available with two different engines; a standard 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque, and an optional 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that yields 164 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Transmission options consist of a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. Fuel mileage falls within an EPA estimated range of 26 mpg city to 36 mpg highway, depending on transmission and engine selection. Features include 18-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, power sunroof with tilt, hands-free phone capabilities, paddle shifters, leather trim, and push-button start. Safety is comprised of advanced airbags, brake assist (BA), anti-lock braking (ABS), traction control (TCS), electronic brake distribution (EBD), and tire pressure monitoring (TPMS). What's new for 2013?

After major revisions to the powertrain in 2012, Kia has left the Soul mostly unchanged for 2013. A revised grill with chrome accents is new, as are the various Kia badges that adorn the vehicle. Inside, audio controls are now located on the steering wheel and Bluetooth is standard even on base manual transmission equipped cars. Soul ! variants now come with power folding mirrors and several new colors are available across all model ranges.

Model Review

The Soul is available in three trim levels: the base Soul, 'Soul +' and 'Soul !.' The base Soul comes powered by a 138-horsepower 1.6L 4-cylinder, which is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The other Soul models are powered by a 164-horsepower 2.0L 4-cylinder, which is paired to a standard 6-speed automatic transmission. Kia estimates fuel economy at 25 mpg city/30 mpg highway from the 1.6L, with a slight reduction for the 2.0L.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.
