The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen is a station wagon powered by a standard 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder engine that produces 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. For the "green" driver an optional 2.0-liter TDI� diesel engine that produces 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque is also available. Both engines can be paired with an optional 6-speed automatic transmission, however the standard engine comes standard with a 5-speed manual transmission while the diesel engine comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. Fuel mileage for the standard engine is an EPA estimated 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway while the diesel engine gets a boost to an EPA estimated 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway. Features include panoramic sunroof, 8-speaker sound system, touch-screen sound system, multi-function steering wheel and touch-screen navigation. Safety is comprised of crash optimized front end, pinch-protection power windows, Intelligent Crash Response, electronic stability control (ESC), and anti-slip regulation (ASR). The Jetta SportWagen is backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Model Review

Base S and SE versions of the 2013 Jetta Sportwagen come with a 170-horsepower, 2.5L in-line 5-cylinder engine, while the TDI model comes with a 140-horsepower, 2.0L turbo-diesel 4-cylinder. The TDI engine is actually the quicker of the two engines, as it produces much more torque--236 pound-feet, as low as 1,750 rpm. This reduces the need for downshifts and brings a relaxed, yet strong driving experience. Gas mileage is also very good in the TDI--up to an EPA-rated 30 mpg city, 42 mpg highway.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
