Summary

Provided by NADAguides.com

Debuting a restyled exterior and interior, the 2012 Toyota Tacoma is a compact pickup truck offered in two-door and four-door trim levels. The Tacoma is powered by a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. An optional engine upgrade grants the driver a 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 236 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. The base engine can be paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission while the upgraded engine can be paired with a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. Both engines have the option of RWD or 4WD drivetrains. Fuel mileage is an EPA estimated 21 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, for the standard engine. Maximum towing capacity is 3500 lbs. for the standard engine and 6500 lbs. for the upgraded engine. Options include power outside mirrors, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, integrated backup camera, 6-disc CD changer, and auto-dimming mirror with monitor. Safety is comprised of vehicle stability control (VSC), traction control (TRAC), anti-lock brake system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), advanced airbags, and smart stop technology (SST). The Tacoma is backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Benefits of Driving a 2012 Toyota Tacoma Truck

There aren't as many compact truck models on the market as there used to be, but Toyota has done a great job keeping the Tacoma competitive and up-to-date. Toyota boasts that it has more model variations than any other truck manufacturer in this class. And with the Tacoma's reputation for reliability and resale value it will continue to stand out in the compact truck market. For those who don't have to tow much more than a small boat or trailer, the Tacoma should provide all the hauling ability needed while still maintaining good maneuverability for daily driving.

What's new for 2012?

The 2012 model year brings a host of updates to the Tacoma line up. The exterior styling has been updated with a new look at the front of the vehicle. A new hood, grill and headlights along with new upper and lower bumper areas make this year's truck to stand out from previous versions. The interior has also been updated with new materials for the center console and door trim. For those who ordered a backup camera, the screen has now grown from 2.4 inches to 3.3 inches. New interior options include heavy-duty all-weather flooring for access cab and double cab versions and water resistant fabric protection seats for the TRD sport and Off-Road models. A couple of new, high-tech audio systems are also newly available for 2012, proving that utility doesn't always have to come at the cost of entertainment.

Model Strengths

  • Better maneuverability than a full-size truck
  • wide range of models and build combinations
  • special performance and off-road variants
  • 6,500-pound towing capability
  • reputation for reliability and historically good resale value

Model Review

Two different engines are available on the 2012 Toyota Tacoma lineup: a 159-horsepower, 2.7L 4-cylinder and a 236-hp, 4.0L V6. Both engines utilize variable valve timing to help provide both strong low-end torque as well as higher-rev passing power. A 6-speed manual transmission is available with the V6 as is a 5-speed automatic. 4-cylinder Tacomas are equipped with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.

Safety Ratings help

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
