Benefits of Driving a 2012 RAM 1500 Truck

The Ram stands out compared to other full-size pickups because of its well-engineered coil-spring rear suspension system, which allows a smoother ride compared to pickups with leaf springs, while permitting hauling and towing ratings comparable to those rival models. Its Hemi V8 engine is also one of the strongest options for half-ton truck shoppers, and it returns up to 20 mpg. Chrysler says that the Ram 1500 is the first truck in its segment to offer a solution known as the RamBox, that offers flexible storage bed-side--including a removable liner--and that it's the first truck in this class with available surround-sound audio.

What's new for 2012?

For 2012, Dodge has given the 6-speed automatic transmission a new calibration, with Electronic Range Select, and there's a new steering wheel with integrated cruise-control buttons on most models. A new Mossy Oak Edition gives the Ram 1500 a camouflage look, while a new Tradesman HD model ups the Ram's trailer and payload ratings.

Model Strengths

  • Strong Hemi V8
  • coil-spring rear suspension for a better ride
  • innovative RamBox bed-side storage
  • stylish, macho appearance
  • full luxury interior in upper trims

Model Review

The 2012 Ram 1500 lineup is now offered in eleven different models, in Regular Cab, Quad Cab, or Crew Cab configurations, with two bed lengths, to fit a very wide range of uses from daily commuting and weekend towing to luxurious ranch use, or regular towing or hauling work. Powertrains also range from an affordable base V6 up to a strong Hemi V8 and an R/T model that takes full advantage of it for the street.

Safety Ratings help

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
