2013 Chevrolet Equinox Sport Utility Crossover

Summary

Provided by NADAguides.com

Now available with new colors and a brand new engine, the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox is a mid-size crossover SUV with a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. Under the hood drivers will find a 2.4-liter direct injected 4-cylinder engine that produces 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. For increased performance Chevrolet offers an optional 3.6-liter direct injected V6 that yields 292 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. FWD is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission enabling the Equinox to achieve an EPA estimated 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. Features include 19-inch wheels, heated leather seats, 8-way power adjustable front seats, USB port, available rear seat entertainment system, Chevrolet MyLink, and a power liftgate. Safety is comprised of advanced airbags, StabiliTrak, Electronic Stability Control System (ESC), traction control system (TCS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), and anti-lock braking system (ABS). The Equinox is backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Benefits of Driving a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox Sport Utility Crossover

Starting at under $24,000, the 2013 Chevy Equinox is one of the most affordable crossover vehicles in its class, rivaling Honda's CR-V and the Toyota RAV4. The interior features a dual-cockpit design, ice-blue ambient lighting and sophisticated, classy appearance touches that makes it look much more expensive than it is. And with available V6 power under the hood, the Equinox makes an attractive family and cargo hauler.

What's new for 2013?

The Chevrolet Equinox hits 2013 with only one substantial change. The 264-horsepower 3.0L V6 of previous years is replaced by a more powerful 3.6L, which produces 301 horsepower and 272 foot-pounds of torque. The new engine is estimated to deliver 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Elsewhere, the Equinox LTZ receives a newly tuned suspension and the optional Safety Package from 2012 now standard on the LTZ and available on the 2LT.

Model Strengths

  • Powerful and efficient engine selection
  • sharp styling inside and out

Model Review

The 2013 Chevrolet Equinox is an exciting contender in the mid-size crossover segment. It has the same platform as the GMC Terrain and shares a general aesthetic with both the Chevy Traverse and the latest Malibu. The Equinox's rocker panels are integrated into the doors, narrowing the area over which a passenger must step. The body is stiffened with single-piece side stampings plus high-strength steel in critical areas.

Safety Ratings help

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
