Benefits of Driving a 2013 Hyundai Elantra Hatchback

The Elantra GT appeals to those who want a hatchback that's slightly larger and more substantial than subcompact models (like Hyundai's Accent) that's more premium-feeling, yet still budget-minded. The new GT also carves out a sportier driving experience compared to the sedan, and it competes with the Ford Focus, Mazda3, Toyota Matrix and Volkswagen Golf, among others. According to Hyundai it has more passenger and cargo space than any of those models. It's also the first Elantra model with a driver knee airbag.

What's new for 2013?

The Elantra GT is a new 5-door compact hatchback model, and a new body style, that's very closely based on the Hyundai Elantra sedan. But compared to the sedan, it emphasizes a sportier look and sportier driving experience, with a somewhat higher price but also more standard features. It's also the first Elantra model, and the first model in the Hyundai lineup, to allow the driver to select steering firmness.

Model Strengths

  • Economic
  • practical
  • well-equipped and available in a variety of body styles.

Model Review

The new 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT comes in one 5-door hatchback body style that looks much like the Elantra sedan in the front, but quite different from behind. With a completely different roofline, as well as crisp lines that wrap around the back of the car, as well as a prominent rear spoiler, this model carries itself with the sophistication--and more upright look--of a European hatchback.

Safety Ratings help

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
