What's new for 2008?

The Saturn Sky, new for 2007, has plenty of changes for 2008. With standard limited slip differential and StabiliTrak electronic stability control the 2008 Sky makes for an easier ride. For comfort and style the 08 Sky now comes with a standard driver's seat power height adjuster, CD player with speed compensated volume control, XM satellite radio and a leather wrapped steering wheel. For safety a tire pressure monitoring system is also standard on all 2008 Skys.

Model Review

The Saturn Sky, which debuted for the 2007 model year, shares the same Kappa platform the Pontiac Solstice has been using for the past two years. Standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and the usual power accoutrements separate the Sky from the Solstice, as does an added layer to the cloth convertible top for more noise attenuation, and a revised suspension.

The Sky is a stylish and low-slung, two-seat roadster that shares a platform (though not exterior panels) with Pontiac's Solstice. It is arguably the more attractive of the two, and comes with more standard equipment, including features like air conditioning, standard 18-inch rims, keyless entry, and anti-lock brakes.

The Sky's standard engine is a 2.4-liter, 177-horsepower four connected to a five-speed manual transmission, with a five-speed automatic available as an option. For 2007, a high-performance Red Line version of the Sky joined the lineup. It features a 260-horsepower turbocharged direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, firmer suspension setting, polished 18-inch wheels, and dual chrome-tipped exhaust, as well as its own interior enhancements, such as Red Line-specific instruments (including a digital boost gauge), metallic sill plates, and stainless steel trim.

Changes for 2008 are few. Stability control is now standard on both models, as is a limited-slip differential. A new radio with XM is standard as well, while a Monsoon audio system is an option.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
