A carry-over from 2007, the Impala is a four-door five-passenger family sedan offered in four different trim levels. The LS and LT feature a 3.5-liter V6 engine, with an optional 3.9-liter V6 that produces 233 horsepower as an option on the LT model. That same engine is standard equipment on the LTZ, with the SS featuring a 5.3-liter V8 engine that produces 303 horsepower and 323 ft-lb. of torque. All models are front-wheel-drive and come standard with a four-speed automatic transmission.

What's new for 2008?

For 2008, StabiliTrak is now standard on the uplevel Chevy Impala models. The 2LT trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, while the SS now has 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels and the LTZ has 18-inch machined aluminum flangless wheels as standard. In addition, performance suspension comes with the LTZ trim. E85 flex-fuel ability is now standard with the 3.9L engine. All Chevy Impalas include XM satellite radio. Three new exterior colors join the 2008 palette--Gold Mist Metallic, Mocha Bronze Metallic, and Slate Metallic.

The Impala, Chevy's top-seller for the last few years, is usually classed as a mid-size sedan, but it is one of the bigger mid-sizes around. As such, it is no surprise that the Impala boasts roomy seating and almost 19 cubic feet of trunk space.

The front-drive full-size Impala sedan was redesigned for 2006. The big news for 2008 is a new 1LT Luxury Edition that includes a leather steering wheel with radio controls, a folding rear seat, anti-lock brakes and traction control, a rear spoiler, and a year of OnStar with navigation.

Other changes for the 2008 Impala include flex-fuel capability for the optional 3.9-liter V-6. The standard 3.5-liter V-6 in base models already offered the greenish feature. The 5.3-liter V-8 in SS models continues with 303 horsepower. All engines are mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

The Impala offers a large and accommodating passenger cabin, this time with a flip-and-fold rear seat in which the rear seat cushions flip forward to reveal a covered storage area and can also fold flat to maximize cargo volume via a large pass-through opening to the trunk.

Anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution are standard on all versions but the base model, and traction control is also available. A tire pressure monitor is standard on all models. Stability control is now standard on 2LT, LTZ, and SS Impalas.

Almost all versions get new wheels for 2008, 17-inchers on some LTs and 18-inchers on LTZ and SS models. The LTZ also gets a standard FE3 suspension package.

XM Satellite radio is standard on all models for 2008. Those equipped with OnStar get turn-by-turn navigation.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
