The Subaru Legacy now has three different engines available for 2008, depending on the model. 2.5 i and 2.5 i Limited models come with a 170-horsepower, 2.5L horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, while 2.5 GT Limited and Spec.B models get a turbocharged and intercooled 2.5L flat-four making 243 horsepower. The Legacy sedan stands alone in nomenclature this year - only wagons merit the Outback tag in 2008 at the Japanese automaker's showrooms.

The Legacy lineup has grown, however, from last year's range. In 2007 Subaru added the high-performance Spec.B to the Legacy range. Built around a 243-horsepower version of the Subaru 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, teamed up with a modified version of the WRX's six-speed manual gearbox and AWD system, the Spec B also features driver-adjustable SI-Drive, which allows engine performance characteristics to be toggled between three settings - "intelligent," "sport," and "sport sharp."

This year Subaru adds another Legacy - the first six-cylinder model ever - to its mid-size lineup. The new model is the Legacy 3.0R Limited. It's powered by a 245-hp version of Subaru's flat six, and is paired with a five-speed automatic outfitted with paddle shifters. The SI-Drive system is also offered on the 3.0R; a Bilstein sport suspension is also featured.

This year all Legacy sedans get new front- and rear-end styling, with a bigger grille, new bumpers and lights. Inside, a revised instrument panel and fabrics make for a richer feel. A telescoping steering wheel is standard, and a new remote keyless entry system is integrated into the key fob. The wheel itself comes with audio control buttons on premium models.

Stability control is standard on the upmarket Legacy four-doors as well, while tire pressure monitors and satellite radio pre-wiring is also included across the board.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
