The 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLS Class is comprised of the 5.5-liter Sedan or the 6.2-liter AMG Sedan. Both are four door luxury Sedans offering the finest in styling, handling and performance � attributes for which Mercedes-Benz has long been known. What�s even more interesting is the car�s Coupe-like stance, even with four doors. Two trim levels are offered in this class � the CLS550 or the CLS63 AMG. The CLS550 comes equipped with a 382 horsepower 5.5-liter V8 with 391 lbs.-ft of torque while the CLS63 AMG gets more oomph with its 507 horsepower 6.2-liter V8.

Mercedes-Benz is all about comfort, luxury, and refinement, and the 2008 CLS executes all of these exceedingly well. The CLS isn't a large vehicle and the word 'sedan' doesn't seem to fit this smallish car with four doors, so Mercedes-Benz calls it a four-door coupe. A computer-controlled seven-speed automatic transmission helps the CLS550 achieve 21 mpg on the highway, which is respectable for a big V8. The upper-level CLS63 will please performance enthusiasts with its very powerful 6.3L V8 engine that generates 507 horsepower. The brakes, suspension, wheels, and even steering wheel are designed by AMG. The result is a very comfortable performance coupe.

What's new for 2008?

After receiving more powerful engines and new trim designations in 2007, the two 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLS 4-door 'coupes' undergo modest changes for 2008. The 18-inch wheels sport a new seven-spoke design, and Sirius satellite radio is now standard. The CLS550 base price increases $700 to $67,600, while the CLS63 AMG bumps up $1,000 to $93,200.

Model Review

Nobody executes the combination of performance and luxury like Mercedes-Benz, and the 2008 CLS-Class represents Mercedes-Benz' take on those two attributes in a mid-size sedan. The interior dimensions are on the small size--particularly in the rear seat--so Mercedes-Benz has elected to call it a 'four-door coupe.'

2008 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class: What's New

The sleek, E-Class-derived CLS "four-door coupe" joined the Mercedes lineup in 2006 as an all-new model. Last year, Mercedes added a CLS63 AMG, which comes with a 507-horsepower engine.

Both models return for 2008, the CLS550 with its 382-hp engine. This year, both add standard satellite radio and 18-inch, seven-spoke wheels to their extensive lineup of gear.

All CLS models are equipped with Mercedes' PRE-SAFE collision preparation system, which was originally offered on the S-Class sedan. All models also get a premium Harmon/Kardon audio system with six-disc CD changer.

Both CLS-Class engines drive the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. An Airmatic suspension, Sensotronic Brake Control, traction control, Automatic Slip Program, and Electronic Stability Program are included. Side-impact and side-curtain airbags, and active front head restraints, are standard.

The CLS also comes with heated and ventilated multi-contour seats, adaptive cruise control and headlamps, in addition to a power trunk closer. All audio systems have an interface for an Apple iPod or MP3 player.
