New last year, the current Elantra sedan is wider and longer, with more interior room than ever, enough to push it close to the mid-size category, as far as government/EPA classifications go.

With 97.9 cubic feet of passenger room and 14.2 cubic feet of trunk space, it has the most interior volume (passenger volume plus trunk space) for a sedan in its class. The Elantra's total interior volume of 112.1 cubic feet even surpasses the interior volume of the near-luxury Acura TL (110.4 cubic feet) sedan. The Elantra's 14.2 cubic foot trunk capacity also beats Civic and Corolla. If that weren't roomy enough, Hyundai will add an Elantra Touring model in 2009.

The Elantra's standard 2.0-liter engine develops 138 horsepower and qualifies for SULEV (Super Low Emissions Vehicle) status. A five-speed manual transmission is standard in the Elantra, with a four-speed automatic available optionally.

Front, side, and curtain airbags are standard across the Elantra lineup. So too are anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and active front head and tire-pressure monitors.

Two trim levels are offered: GLS and SE. All versions come standard with power windows, power heated rearview mirrors, power door locks, remote keyless entry with alarm and trunk opener, rear center armrest with cupholders, intermittent windshield wipers, and tilt steering wheel.

For 2008, the Elantra SE get all the equipment in the GLS Preferred Package plus a telescoping leather steering wheel with secondary audio controls, leather shift knob, 16-inch alloy wheels with P205/55HR16 tires and trip computer. Stability control and brake assist are also standard on the SE for the new model year.

The former Limited model is now dubbed Elantra SE Premium + Leather. It adds leather seating surfaces, leather door panel inserts, leather armrest, and heated front seats.

A Sun and Sound package is available that combines a power sunroof and a 220-watt premium audio system featuring AM/FM/six-CD changer/MP3 with auxiliary input jack and an external amplifier.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
