Receiving a plethora of updates this year, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class luxury roadster with a power-retractable hardtop has been upgraded with restyled front and rear fascias, grille, side mirrors and steering wheel. In addition, the base model is now known as the SLK300, and the midlevel SLK350 gets a significant power boost. SLK300 is propelled by a 3.0L V6 engine that produces 228 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, paired to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The SLK300 completes the 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. The SLK350 now boasts a 3.5L V6 engine generating 300 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, attached to the mandatory seven-speed automatic transmission, and zipping 0-60 in 5.4 seconds. The high-performance SLK55 AMG packs a 5.5L V8 that grinds out 355 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque with the mandatory seven-speed automatic and will do 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. Fuel economy estimates range from 17 mpg city/26 mpg hwy for the 3.0L to 18/26 mpg for the 3.5L. Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class safety features include stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes with brake assist, knee airbags, side airbags and the TeleAid emergency call system.
With a secure power retractable hardtop, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class roadster offers more refinement and civility than either the BMW Z4, Honda S2000, or Porsche Boxster. It also provides a luxurious interior and performance similar to that of the larger SL. And the SLK ranks as one of the safest convertibles on the market, with head-protective side air bags.
For 2009, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class roadster receives a freshening both outside, inside, and underneath. Exterior styling is revised to resemble both the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR supercar, as well as the company's current Formula One racer. The treatment includes a new front bumper, grille, headlights, and air dam. The rear fascia has been updated as well, with trapezoidal exhaust tips. The interior is also updated, with a new instrument cluster and three-point steering wheel with multi-function buttons.
Three different variants of the Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster are again offered for 2009, and they all get minor facelifts in keeping with their more mature SL-Class siblings. As for power, the SLK280 retains its 228-hp 3.0L V6, while the SLK350's 3.5L V6 gets a nice boost from 268 hp to 305 hp, and the high-performance SLK55 AMG carries over with its potent 355-hp 5.5L V8.
