The 5-passenger Hummer H2 gets a few new features and cosmetic options in 2009. The revamped interior of the Hummer features second-row captain's chairs, a new third-row-seat storage option, Bluetooth, real-time traffic updates, OnStar in the navigation system, revised standalone rearview camera and a heated power-tilt steering wheel. Later in 2009, a new Black Chrome limited edition will become available. The Hummer's 6.2L V8 engine, which generates 393 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, is now FlexFuel E85 capable. The standard six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control reigns over the sturdy four-wheel drive. The H2 retains its bold, rugged exterior styling and off-road performance counterpointed to a plush interior. Due to the H2's GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of more than 8,500 pounds, the EPA declines to state fuel economy estimates. Standard Hummer H2 safety equipment includes traction control, antilock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control with rollover prevention, and full-length side curtain airbags.
The 2009 Hummer H2, with its 6-foot 7-inch height and 6,614-pound curb weight, makes an impression wherever it goes. The H2's signature off-road capabilities are courtesy of its monstrous 315-series tires and aggressive approach and departure angles. And its 8,200-pound towing capability keeps up with the abilities of full-size pickups. The H2's styling and attitude echo the military-derived H1, but it costs half as much.
In an attempt to reduce the H2's environmental impact, for 2009, Hummer adds E85 flex fuel capability to its 6.2L V8 engine. Inside the Hummer gets amenities such as optional second row bucket seats, Bluetooth connectivity, XM satellite radio with real-time traffic and a heated power adjustable steering wheel.
The 2009 Hummer H2 is built on the 4-wheel-drive Chevy Tahoe platform, but with a heavier-duty frame and sturdier suspension components. Its high seating position and imposing stance have the tough-guy appeal of the H1, but with an MSRP that starts at $63,090. Two body styles are available: a sport utility body and what Hummer calls an SUT, or a sport utility truck with an open-air 4x6-foot pickup-style bed.
