Basically unchanged this year, the GMC Envoy adds only Bluetooth connectivity for 2009. A traditional body-on-frame SUV offered in two- and four-wheel-drive configurations, the GMC Envoy is powered by a 4.2V inline-six engine with 285 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque in the SLE and SLT, and a 5.3L V8 engine with 300 hp and 321 lb-ft in the Denali. Both the Envoy and the top-of-the-line Envoy Denali offer a roomy, midsize package that seats up to five passengers and includes up to 80.1 cubic feet of versatile cargo space. Among GMC Envoy Denali standard features are laminated glass, upgraded leather and extra sound insulation for a quieter ride. Safety features, such as stability control and full-length side curtain airbags, and a rear entertainment system are available on all GMC Envoys. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 2WD Envoy is 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy, while the 4WD gets one mpg less.
Unlike the newer, passenger-oriented GMC Acadia, the Envoy follows an older, truck-based design that may be a better choice for those who plan to tow frequently yet don't need all the extra space of a full-size SUV. Those who appreciate the Envoy had better act soon, though; it's going to be discontinued after this model year.
Bluetooth hands-free connectivity is newly available in the Envoy for 2009, and three new exterior colors are offered: Sand Beige Metallic, Quicksilver Metallic and Silver-Green Metallic.
The Envoy is GMC's mid-size truck-based sport-utility vehicle, powered by V6 or V8 engines. Standard on Envoy SLE and SLT models is a 285-horsepower, 4.2-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine, while Envoy Denali models get a 300-horsepower, 5.3-liter V8. Both engines are mated to a smooth-shifting 4-speed automatic transmission, and any of the models can be had with rear- or 4-wheel drive.
