2010 Lincoln MKS Sedan

Summary

Provided by NADAguides.com

The 2010 Lincoln MKS is a full-size luxury sedan with four-doors and comfortable seating for five passengers. The MKS is available with FWD or AWD and both are powered by a 3.7L V6 engine which produces 270 hp. The big news is the available twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine which is optional on the AWD model. This engine produces 355 hp while returning 25 mpg on the highway, better than its class rivals. On the list of 2010 Lincoln MKS standard features are such luxury items as HID headlights, heated and cooled seats, and the popular SYNC entertainment/communication system.

Benefits of Driving a 2010 Lincoln MKS Sedan

The MKS is a full-sized sedan, and utilizes a platform shared with the Ford Taurus, with a very roomy interior and tons of technology that is new for Lincoln, such as keyless entry and adaptive cruise control, items usually found on much higher-priced luxury sedans. The EcoBoost engine improves both performance--by 75 hp--and fuel economy, though the EPA has yet to release figures for 2010.

What's new for 2010?

The MKS was new for 2009, so the 2010 model received little more than a freshening, design-wise. The big news for 2010 is the available EcoBoost engine paired with an all-wheel drive system, which delivers V8 power out of a V6 engine, according to Lincoln. Active parallel parking assist, a collision warning system, and a major upgrade to the voice-activated Microsoft SYNC system are all new options for 2010.

Model Strengths

  • American-made, mid-priced luxury
  • distinctive design
  • new EcoBoost engine available

Model Review

Three variants of the MKS are available for 2010: the 3.7-liter V6 with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, and the 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine with all-wheel drive only. The smaller engine produces 350 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, as compared to 273 hp and 270 ft-lbs of torque from the normally aspirated 3.7-liter. All versions use a 6-speed automatic transmission that can be upgraded to use steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

DEARBORN, Mich. -- The speedy track at Dearborn Proving Ground, historic vehicle test facility for Ford Motor Company in Michigan, consists of a long straight strip once used as an airport runway and a banked loop around each end.

To run this course at speed without losing traction or control, a driver needs a vehicle which responds precisely to instantaneous commands from accelerator, brake and steering wheel, plus a suspension setup that checks overt body roll to keep all that mechanical mass balanced atop the four rubber footprints on pavement.

What one driver uses to power down the straight section and whip around each end's parabolic loop happens to be the flagship sedan in Lincoln's line which now incorporates a unique direct-injection and twin-turbocharged V6 engine plus tightly-tuned suspension and steering systems in the package of a mid-size model but the cabin of a big car with high-riding seats for five and a load of luxury gear.

And the new optional twin-turbo V6 -- promising the fuel economy of a V6 but pumping the power and torque of a big V8 -- is labeled the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6.

The twin-cam aluminum twin-turbo engine with direct-injection and VVT (variable valve timing) delivers 355 hp at 5500 rpm and torque of 350 lb-ft spread over a broad band from 1500 rpm to 5250 rpm.

The new engine ties to a six-speed electronic automatic SelectShift transaxle with steering-wheel paddle shifters and standard all-wheel-drive (AWD) traction.

EPA fuel economy estimates for the EcoBoost V6 come in at 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

And when you plant your foot hard on the go-pedal, this sleek machine races down that long Dearborn straight and seems like it's about to fly off the runway.

That's quite a kick for a plush luxury sedan stuffed with high-tech controls and fancy cabin appointments.

Lincoln's newest sedan looks elegant and classy in a bold design for the body which focuses on a double-wing grille that's a modern homage to the classic 1941 Continental.

The prow of MKS adds horizontal louvers in the fascia to underscore the grille with piercing optics of projector-type HID (high-intensity discharge) headlamps wrapping around front corners.

MKS's package shape features a windshield with steep rake and the rear window also with an aggressive slope plus side windows tipping inward to the roof.

Flanks show slight bulges for fenders around large wheels with a subtle character line etched into the leading edge of each front fender and drawn rearward in a gradual rise to the tail deck.

And a high beltline pitched parallel to the character line gains a trim strip of polished stainless steel which rings the cabin windows.

On the tail, there are large red LED (light-emitting diode) lamps streaked by vertical white light strips.

And protruding from the base of a thick rear fascia are chrome caps of dual exhaust pipes.

Standards on the 2010 Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost include 19-inch premium painted aluminum wheels capped by P255/45R19 V-rated all-season tires, the steering-wheel paddle shifters and AWD system, Lincoln's Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, adaptive HID headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and a rear-window power sunshade.

Lincoln also constructs the MKS '10 with a naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter aluminum V6 VVT engine rigged for standard front-wheel-drive (FWD) or optional AWD traction.

When using regular (87 octane) unleaded gasoline, the V6 produces 273 hp at 6250 rpm and the torque hits 270 lb-ft at 4250 rpm.

With premium (91 octane) fuel, the engine bumps up to 275 hp at 6250 rpm with torque to 276 lb-ft at 4250 rpm.

EPA fuel economy estimates for the V6 come in at 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway for MKS FWD and 16/23 mpg city/highway for MKS AWD.

The AWD device for MKS amounts to an electronically controlled system that's always engaged and automatically splits the engine's torque between front and rear wheels -- up to 100 percent in either direction -- to keep tires rolling on pavement.

The spec sheet for MKS '10 lists lots of active and passive safety equipment.

Passive devices include smart dual-stage frontal air bags for front riders, plus seat-mounted side air bags up front and curtain-style side air bags front and rear.

Active safety systems range from four-wheel disc brakes tied to an anti-lock brake system (ABS) plus a traction control system (TCS) and electronic stability control (ESC).

Suspension for MKS is completely independent. MacPherson struts up front have rear-facing L-shaped lower control arms and isolation via a sub-frame. A multi-link design in back has stamped steel lower control arms and cast upper control arms with vertically mounted shocks positioned at the outboard end of the suspension arms.

The EcoBoost edition scores larger stabilizer bars fore and aft to maintain a flatter pose when cornering.

MKS measures up for the mid-size class as a four-door sedan with a generous passenger compartment that's large enough to carry five adult riders in luxurious comfort.

The cabin layout pitches a pair of bucket seats up front divided by a multi-function console and followed by a rear bench for three with seatback split 60/40 in sections.

Twin front buckets with firm side bolsters adjust 12 ways via power controls and contain internal mechanisms for heating and cooling. Rear seats also get heat elements.

Hand-wrapped premium leather hides by Bridge of Weir in Scotland cover all seats in MKS and trimwork consists of rich hardwoods and polished metal.

* Adaptive Cruise Control -- a radar-based system capable of maintaining a precise distance between the MKS's front bumper and the back bumper of a vehicle ahead.

* Rearview Camera -- for keeping an eye on the vehicle's rearward path.

* Active Park -- the car can actually park itself.

* Lincoln Sync -- voice-activated control over in-car phones, media players and USB storage devices.

Price points for the 2010 MKS begin at $40,870.

Safety Ratings help

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.

Original Warranty  help
Original Warranty
An original warranty is the warranty associated with a vehicle when it is brand new. In addition to the original warranty, select items, like tires, are typically covered by respective manufacturers. Also, an act of Federal law sometimes provides protection for certain components, like emissions equipment.
The original warranty is often broken down into multiple sections, including:
Basic Warranty:
Typically covers everything except for parts that wear out through normal use of the vehicle. Examples of non-covered items are brake pads, wiper blades and filters.
Drivetrain Warranty:
This warranty covers items the basic warranty does not protect. Wear and tear items such as hoses will not be covered, but key items like the engine, transmission, drive axles and driveshaft often will be.
Roadside Assistance:
The level of service differs greatly with this warranty, but many manufacturers offer a toll-free number that helps provide assistance in case you run out of gas, get a flat tire or lock your keys in the car.
Corrosion Warranty:
This warranty focuses on protecting you from holes caused by rust or corrosion in your vehicle's sheet metal.
Please check the owner's manual, visit a local dealership or look at the manufacturer's website to learn more about the specifics of the warranties that apply to a vehicle.

Lincoln Certified Pre-Owned Warranty  help
Certified Pre-Owned Warranty
To be eligible for Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) status, vehicles generally must be recent models with relatively low mileage. CPO vehicles must also pass a detailed inspection, outlined by the manufacturer, which is measured by the number of inspected points.
Warranty coverage can vary from one manufacturer to the next. While most certified pre-owned programs transfer and extend the existing new car warranty terms, others offer a warranty that simply represents an additional year and mileage value. Always check with the manufacturer for the specific warranties they offer.
Common features and benefits of Certified Pre-Owned warranties include:
Age/Mileage Eligibility
To even be considered for certification, a car must be a recent model year and have limited mileage. The exact requirements are established by individual manufacturers.
Lease Term Certified
Some manufacturers offer certified pre-owned cars for lease. The length of the lease is often shorter than a new car lease, but it will cost you less.
Point Inspection
These inspections entail a comprehensive vehicle test to ensure that all parts are in excellent working order. The point inspection list is simply a numbered list of exactly what parts of the car are examined. While many inspections range from a 70- to 150-point checklist, most are very similar and are performed using strict guidelines. Ask your local dealer about specific details.
Return/Exchange Program
Some manufacturers offer a very limited return or exchange period. Find out if you will get the sales tax and licensing/registration fees back should you return or exchange the car.
Roadside Assistance
Most certified pre-owned programs offer free roadside service in case your car breaks down while still under warranty.
Special Financing
Reduced-rate loans are available through many certified pre-owned programs. Manufacturer-backed inspections and warranties help eliminate the risks involved with buying pre-owned, so buyers who qualify can take advantage of the great offers.
Transferable Warranty
When a new car warranty transfers with the certification of the car and remains eligible for the next owner, it is known as a transferable warranty. Once the original transferable warranty expires, an extended warranty takes effect.
Warranty Deductible
This is the amount for which you are responsible when repair work is performed under the warranty. Some manufacturers require a deductible while others don't, so always ask.

6 years or 100,000 miles comprehensive limited warranty coverage from the original in-service date
