The Passat may not have the fuel sipping TDI clean diesel engine as an option, but even-so, it turns in a respectable 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

What's new for 2010?

The Passat got stripped down to basics for 2009, so a few things were added for 2010 to fill out the package. The automatic transmission has been replaced with Volkswagen's 6-speed DSG transmission with TipTronic shifting. The steering wheel got a major upgrade to being leather-wrapped and multi-functional and Bluetooth is now standard. New 17-inch wheels are standard, too, with optional 18-inch wheels and sport suspension available this year.

Model Review

There are two versions of the Passat, a wagon and a sedan, that are nearly identical but for the back half of the car. They both have an inline 4-cylinder engine with 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Though it's disguised as a sensible family car, the Passat reaches 60 mph from a stop in 7.4 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. It uses a 6-speed DSG transmission with TipTronic for manual shifting.
