A full-size luxury SUV, the 2010 Mercedes-Benz M-Class seats five passengers with plenty of room left over for cargo. The M-Class is available in a wide range of trims; including the all-new ML450 hybrid. The ML350 BlueTEC utilizes a 3.0L turbodiesel V6 which produces 210 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque while earning an estimated 24 mpg on the highway. The standard ML350 houses a 268 hp 3.5L V6. The more powerful ML550 has a 5.5L V8 producing 382 hp and at the top of the range is the ML63 AMG which utilizes a 503 hp 6.3L V8. All M-Class SUVs are equipped with seven-speed automatic transmissions except the hybrid which has a CVT.

What's new for 2010?

A new ML450 Hybrid model joins the lineup for 2010, offering a full hybrid powertrain and fuel economy ratings of 21 mpg city, 24 highway. Otherwise, burl walnut trim is newly available on all models, as is a premium leather steering wheel. Palladium Silver and Steel Gray are new exterior colors.

Model Review

At the beginning of the model year the M-Class is available with four different powertrains. The ML350 offers a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6, and is available with either 4-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. The rest of the lineup is all-wheel drive only. The ML550 gets a 382-hp, 5.0-liter V8, while the high-performance ML63 AMG adds a 503-hp, 6.3-liter hand-built V8. Across the line power is sent out via a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
