The 2011 Porsche 911 is a rear engine two door luxury sports coupe available in various trims. The standard Carrera is RWD and comes equipped with a 3.5-liter flat-6 that produces 345 hp and 288 lb-ft of torque. The Carrera S gets a boost in power thanks to a 3.8-liter flat-6 that produces 385 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. An AWD option is available with the selection of the Carrera 4 or Carrera 4S, both of which have the same engines as the Carrera and Carrera S. The Carrera, Carrera S, and Carrera 4 are available as coupes or cabriolets, with the Carrera 4 getting an additional Targa trim level. For even more upgraded performance a Carrera GTS and Carrera GTS Cabriolet trim are also offered featuring a direct fuel injection 3.8-liter flat-6 engine that produces 408 hp. The 911 also features several performance trims; 911 Turbo/Turbo Cabriolet (500 hp), 911 Turbo S/Turbo S Cabriolet (530 hp), 911 GT3 (435 hp), 911 GT3 RS (450 hp), 911 GT2 RS (620 hp), and 911 Speedster (408 hp). All Porsche Carrera models come with six-speed manual transmission and a PDK transmission option and get an EPA estimated range of 21 to 25 mpg highway. The 911 comes with a 4-years/50,000-mile warranty.
Buying a Porsche 911 is buying a piece of sports car history. The model has been in production since 1966, and it's kept its true rear-engine design the entire time -- one of the few models to do so. At the base level, the 911 delivers 180-mph speeds for well under six figures while returning 25 mph combined mpg. But for those with deep pockets and enviable driving skills, the quarter-million-dollar 911 GT2 RS will take you over 200 mph. This kind of performance is hard to find at any price. However, Porsche offers an entry-level 911 model starting under $78,000, opening the door to a lot more people to Porsche design and performance.
At the 2010 L.A. Auto Show, Porsche announced two new 911 models for 2011, the top-down Speedster and the Carrera GTS coupe and cabriolet. The Speedster is a limited-edition model, with only 356 units to be built, while the GTS occupies the middle ground between the more basic Carrera S and the GT3 super-performance car.
With a history decades long, it's not very surprising that there are so many models of 911 available with engine output ranging from 345 hp to 620 hp and price tags to match. Coupes, convertibles, and venerable targa models are all still available and feature the trademark 'engine behind the rear axle' drivetrain.
