Entering its third year in production, the 2012 GMC Terrain has become known as a formidable choice in the smaller crossover vehicle segment. Sold in SLE and SLT trim models, the 2012 GMC Acadia includes XM satellite radio, rearview camera system, OnStar, remote keyless entry and cruise control as standard. 18-inch wheels, heated seats and remote starting system are added to the Acadia SLT model. Safety equipment found on all 2012 GMC Terrain models include six airbags, daytime running lights and StabiliTrak with traction control. Powerplant choices for the 2012 GMC Terrain consist of either a four-cylinder or an E85 compatible six-cylinder engine. The base 2.4 liter, inline-4 powerplant of the 2012 GMC Terrain produces 182 horsepower and 172 pounds-feet of torque. An optional 3-liter V-6 engine on the 2012 Terrain provides 264 horsepower. Both engines for the crossover vehicle features gasoline direct injection as well as modern all-aluminum construction networked through a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Available as a front or all-wheel drive model, the 2012 GMC Terrain line-up maintains an average fuel economy above 20 miles per gallon.
Starting about $25,500, the 2012 GMC Terrain is one of the most affordable crossover vehicles in its class; a class that includes the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. The interior features a dual-cockpit design, ice-blue ambient lighting and sophisticated, classy appearance touches that makes it look much more expensive than it is.
The 4-cylinder is E85-capable for 2012, and the SLT trim now comes with 17-inch wheels, down from last year's 18-inch wheels. Otherwise, the Terrain is carried over from 2011 unchanged.
The 2012 GMC Terrain is an exciting contender in the mid-size crossover segment. It has the same platform as the Chevrolet Equinox and shares a general aesthetic with both the Acadia and the latest Chevrolet Malibu. The Terrain's rocker panels are integrated into the doors, narrowing the area over which a passenger must step. The body is stiffened with single-piece side stampings plus high-strength steel in critical areas.
