Offered in regular, extended and four-door crew cab versions with the option of rear or four-wheel drive, the 2012 GMC Canyon is a well-suited pickup truck for places where a full-sized truck is unnecessary. Divided by three trim levels, a Work Truck trim level is available for regular and extended cab models of the 2012 GMC Canyon offering a basic amount of standard convenience features. Tilt steering column, air conditioning and AM/FM stereo is included on the lower trim version of the 2012 Canyon. Introduced last year, the 2012 GMC Canyon also adds the standard inclusion of Bluetooth connectivity. Above the Work Truck level, 2012 GMC Canyon SLE and SLT provide a more completed list of standard features as well as the crew cab body configuration. AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 compatibility, XM satellite radio along with fog lamps are included on SLE as well as SLT models. The base engine on most 2012 GMC Canyon is a 2.9 liter four-cylinder capable of generating 185 horsepower. Standard solely on the GMC Canyon crew cab with four-wheel drive but optional for the other body configurations, a 3.7 liter inline-5 runs on 242 horsepower. Eight-cylinder power is also included on the 2012 Canyon in the form of a Vortec 5.3 liter producing 300 horsepower. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmission choices are available on the 2012 GMC Canyon.
The GMC Canyon falls in the compact pickup truck category and is a sister vehicle to the Chevrolet Colorado. Base pricing starts at $17,410, making it one of the most affordable entry-level trucks available. The Canyon has been praised by reviewers for its simple and straightforward layout of interior controls and gauges. Properly equipped with the Z85 towing package on the optional V8 engine, the 2012 Canyon can tow up to 6,000 pounds. It competes directly with the Nissan Frontier and the Toyota Tacoma. Fuel economy is estimated at 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the 2-wheel drive 4-cylinder version.
For 2012, the SLE Canyon loses its manual transmission; otherwise the Canyon is basically unchanged.
The 2012 GMC Canyon is available in three trims-- Work Truck, SLE and SLT --and in three body styles--Regular, Extended and Crew cab. Two bed lengths (5.1-foot and 6-foot) and three different engines are available.
