The Pathfinder-alike finds 240 hp.

by Bob Storck

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - This is what everyone has in mind when they buy a sport-ute: comfortable and secure navigation of snow-covered back roads, while on the way to fun and frolic.

However, most of us - and most sport-utes - spend most of their time in suburban commuting, and there, most of their gripes and shortcomings surface.

I personally have always liked Nissan's sport-utes better than most of the competition. When the Pathfinder was introduced I was immediately taken with the smooth and powerful engine and stable suspension. Just looking at it inspires confidence: note how many sport utes look tall and tipsy, while the low wide profile and generous track makes the Pathfinder, and now its luxury cousin the QX4, look solid, which they are.

Credit Nissan for being the first Japanese automaker to recognize the importance of designing products tailored to the American market's unique taste. The Pathfinder's original model, a three-door sport-utility vehicle built atop the chassis of Nissan's pickup truck, became one of the first concepts from the company's design facility in La Jolla, Calif.

Despite early sales success for Pathfinder, the U.S. preference in 4x4 wagons eventually shifted to five-door versions. To that end Nissan produced a five-door Pathfinder, which cleverly seats its door handles amid trim of the roof pillar so it still looked like a sportier three-door wagon. This ploy has been maintained, and gives the vehicle the illusion of being smaller than it is.

Infiniti got their own version, and the QX4 that has all the upscale components, plus quite a few more. Now, in its first major redesign, the QX4 receives a bolder and crisper exterior appearance, a restyled interior package including a new instrument panel and center console, a new optional navigation system and an increase of 70 horsepower from an all-new 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine.

With the QX4's generous track and wheelbase, the Infiniti rides as solidly as it looks. Nissan's designers use a unibody for Pathfinder and QX4 to form a stiffer body that resists the typical four-wheeler's tendency to rattle and squeak. Don't expect it to ride like a luxury sedan on rough surfaces, though.

More power, more windswept

The QX4's new exterior package, aided by computer modeling, looks bold and aggressive, but also windswept. The front hood slopes upward to meet a canted windshield defined by more rear-raked A pillars. Contours on side panels form strong horizontal lines near the ground, while the forward-canted C pillar conceals rear door handles. Beefy wheel arches cover the large tires, and give the QX a serious image. The no-nonsense grille could not be called stylish, but while purposeful, still maintains an air of elegance.

QX4's suspension consists of heavy-duty independent strut design up front and five-link rigid rear axle, with stabilizer bars mounted fore and aft. Anti-lock brakes hitched to all wheels rank as a new safety asset on all models, which apply disc brakes in front with rear self-adjusting drums.

The biggest news for 2001 is the new 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 that produces 240 horsepower, an increase of 70 horsepower. This new engine is part of the same engine family that was named one of the 'Ten Best Engines' in the world six consecutive years by Ward's Auto World magazine. More than 100 countermeasures have been incorporated to minimize levels of noise, vibration and harshness.

All 2001 QX4s are equipped with a new electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. For the first time, QX4 is available in two-wheel drive for buyers desiring the image of a sport-utility vehicle, but who may not need the all-climate capabilities of a 4WD system, or with Infiniti's advanced All-Mode 4WD system.

The All-Mode 4WD system utilizes all-wheel drive technology derived from Nissan's world-class Skyline GT-R sports coupe (rather than traditional truck-based systems). All-Mode 4WD was designed to instantly distribute torque to the front wheels (up to 50 percent can go to the front wheels on demand) resulting in optimal traction with improved fuel economy and enhanced cornering capability. It has a 5000-lb tow limit.

Nissan's California studio applies twin form-fitting front bucket seats and a rear bench for three with seatbacks split 60-40 to expand the rear cargo area in various ways. A long list of standard appointments includes analog instruments, three concealed storage bins, a pair of DC-power electrical outlets, three very useful cupholders in front, and 160-watt audio system with six speakers and CD deck.

The 2001 QX4 includes a long list of standard safety equipment, including new front seat active head restraints, which help to minimize head movement at impact to help reduce whiplash and other more serious injuries in certain rear-end collisions. Other standard safety equipment includes driver and passenger front supplemental air bags, and driver and passenger front seat side-impact supplemental airbags (head and chest type).

The QX4 offers a wide array of luxury appointments, including leather seating surfaces, a leather-wrapped gearshift knob and parking brake lever, wood-tone trim, an eight-way adjustable power driver's seat and a four-way power front passenger's seat. The new QX4 also offers birds-eye maple wood-tone trim, an overhead console with compass and outside temperature display and a six-speaker Bose audio system with AM/FM/cassette and an in-dash six-disc CD changer. Other new features include a striking new leather and faux wood steering wheel with steering wheel mounted audio controls.

Options for the 2WD and 4WD models include a Premium Package (with 17-inch wheels and tires, wood/leather steering wheel, driver's memory switch and steering wheel-mounted audio controls), sunroof, heated front and rear seats and navigation system. The 4WD model also offers an optional Sport Package (with front and rear heated seats and limited-slip differential), sunroof and navigation system.

Safety Ratings help

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.

Original Warranty  help
Original Warranty
An original warranty is the warranty associated with a vehicle when it is brand new. In addition to the original warranty, select items, like tires, are typically covered by respective manufacturers. Also, an act of Federal law sometimes provides protection for certain components, like emissions equipment.
The original warranty is often broken down into multiple sections, including:
Basic Warranty:
Typically covers everything except for parts that wear out through normal use of the vehicle. Examples of non-covered items are brake pads, wiper blades and filters.
Drivetrain Warranty:
This warranty covers items the basic warranty does not protect. Wear and tear items such as hoses will not be covered, but key items like the engine, transmission, drive axles and driveshaft often will be.
Roadside Assistance:
The level of service differs greatly with this warranty, but many manufacturers offer a toll-free number that helps provide assistance in case you run out of gas, get a flat tire or lock your keys in the car.
Corrosion Warranty:
This warranty focuses on protecting you from holes caused by rust or corrosion in your vehicle's sheet metal.
Please check the owner's manual, visit a local dealership or look at the manufacturer's website to learn more about the specifics of the warranties that apply to a vehicle.

Basic 4 Years/60,000 Miles
Drivetrain 6 Years/70,000 Miles
Corrosion 7 Years/Unlimited Miles
Roadside Assistance 4 Years/Unlimited Miles

Infiniti Certified Pre-Owned Warranty  help
Certified Pre-Owned Warranty
To be eligible for Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) status, vehicles generally must be recent models with relatively low mileage. CPO vehicles must also pass a detailed inspection, outlined by the manufacturer, which is measured by the number of inspected points.
Warranty coverage can vary from one manufacturer to the next. While most certified pre-owned programs transfer and extend the existing new car warranty terms, others offer a warranty that simply represents an additional year and mileage value. Always check with the manufacturer for the specific warranties they offer.
Common features and benefits of Certified Pre-Owned warranties include:
Age/Mileage Eligibility
To even be considered for certification, a car must be a recent model year and have limited mileage. The exact requirements are established by individual manufacturers.
Lease Term Certified
Some manufacturers offer certified pre-owned cars for lease. The length of the lease is often shorter than a new car lease, but it will cost you less.
Point Inspection
These inspections entail a comprehensive vehicle test to ensure that all parts are in excellent working order. The point inspection list is simply a numbered list of exactly what parts of the car are examined. While many inspections range from a 70- to 150-point checklist, most are very similar and are performed using strict guidelines. Ask your local dealer about specific details.
Return/Exchange Program
Some manufacturers offer a very limited return or exchange period. Find out if you will get the sales tax and licensing/registration fees back should you return or exchange the car.
Roadside Assistance
Most certified pre-owned programs offer free roadside service in case your car breaks down while still under warranty.
Special Financing
Reduced-rate loans are available through many certified pre-owned programs. Manufacturer-backed inspections and warranties help eliminate the risks involved with buying pre-owned, so buyers who qualify can take advantage of the great offers.
Transferable Warranty
When a new car warranty transfers with the certification of the car and remains eligible for the next owner, it is known as a transferable warranty. Once the original transferable warranty expires, an extended warranty takes effect.
Warranty Deductible
This is the amount for which you are responsible when repair work is performed under the warranty. Some manufacturers require a deductible while others don't, so always ask.

Vehicles within new vehicle warranty period and with less than 15,000 miles: 6 Year/75000 mile limited warranty form vehicles original new vehicle in-service date
