Impeccable build quality; supremely serene cabin; a ride that glides; generous amount of standard equipment

Overview

What's New in the 2016 Lexus LS 460?

Lexus says the LS body now has extra adhesive for greater rigidity and more precise handling. The infotainment system interface is also revised to be more user-friendly. Nonhybrid versions have the option of run-flat summer tires (an attempt at sportiness). And Lexus Enform Service Connect provides maintenance reminders and reports on vehicle status. See the 2016 Lexus LS models for sale near you

Which LS 460 is the Best?

Don't bother going for the F Sport package; why try to make the car something it's really not? But do give the Mark Levinson audio system a good listen. The straight-ahead LS 460 will faithfully provide tranquil transportation for years while you concentrate on other aspects of life. Find a Lexus LS for sale

How Much Does a 2016 Lexus LS 460 Cost?

The 2016 Lexus LS is available with either a standard V8 engine (LS 460) or a V8-based hybrid system (LS 600h L). The LS 460 is offered in regular- or long-wheelbase form (denoted by the second L), while the hybrid comes only with the long wheelbase.

The LS 460 ($73,470) is comprehensively equipped with 18-inch wheels, adjustable drive calibrations, xenon headlights, LED running lights and fog lights, heated power-folding mirrors with integrated LED turn signals and puddle lamps, dual exhaust tips, rain-sensing wipers, power-closing doors, a sunroof, keyless entry/ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, wood and aluminum interior trim, a 12-way power driver's seat and a 10-way power front passenger seat with 3-position memory, a power tilt-telescopic steering wheel with wood and leather trim, a 12.3-in central display screen linked to the Remote Touch controller, a rearview camera, a hard-drive-based navigation system, Bluetooth phone and audio, Siri Eyes Free for extra voice control with iPhones, Lexus Enform mobile-app connectivity and a 10-speaker audio system with HD Radio, satellite radio, auxiliary input and iPod/USB integration.

Options include 19-in wheels, a heated steering wheel, 5-mode air suspension with variable-ratio steering, a 19-speaker Mark Levinson audio system (standard in the hybrid), adaptive cruise control, various other active safety features, LED headlights, upgraded leather and a power trunk lid. The Ultra Luxury package brings quad-zone climate control, power rear seats with lumbar massaging, rear audio controls and rear-seat side airbags. The F Sport package (for the regular 460) adds 19-in wheels of a different design, aluminum pedals, Brembo front brakes, a limited-slip differential (rear-drive versions only), paddle shifters (with rev-matched downshifts on rear-drive models), a sport-tuned air suspension, sport seats and special interior trim.

The LS 460 L ($79,770) is similarly equipped but also comes with heated and ventilated front seats, a power rear sunshade, a power trunk and the heated steering wheel. It also offers an exclusive Executive-Class Seating package that includes extended leather trim, a rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment system and a passenger-side power-reclining rear seat with massage functions.

The LS 600h L ($121,390) has the hybrid powertrain and virtually all the features listed above as standard, except for the F Sport package (unavailable), the Executive-Class Seating package (optional) and adaptive cruise control (optional).

Safety

The LS features active front headrests, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, stability control and eight standard airbags (front, front-side, front-knee and full-length side-curtain). Strangely, rear-seat side airbags cost extra on both 460 versions but are standard in the hybrid.

The numerous high-tech safety features include an optional advanced adaptive cruise control system that utilizes automatic braking to mitigate or prevent forward collisions.

The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the LS its top rating of Good in all crash tests.

Competition

2016 Lexus LS 460 vs the competition

2016 Audi A8 -- The A8 is stylish and has a gorgeous cabin. A new generation is set for 2017, though.

2016 BMW 7 Series -- The 7 Series is all new for 2016 and beyond brilliant.

2016 Cadillac CT6 -- A completely new model, the CT6 is a serious contender.

2016 Jaguar XJ -- The XJ is also ready to be succeeded by a new generation, but it still gives the impression that Jaguar invented the word "waft."

2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class -- The S-Class is the major performer in this class. It's sophisticated, superb and tech-rich.
