Wide powertrain selection; smooth, quiet driving experience; good looks
Interior showing its age; lacks the pizzazz of rivals
The diesel version has fallen quietly out of the lineup. The GLE 400 is replaced by the GLE43 AMG version. A rearview camera is now standard, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi becomes available. See the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class models for sale near you
For normal people with a Mercedes-Benz budget, it's a choice between the GLE 43 and the GLE 550e plug-in hybrid. The crazy thing is that the hybrid is less expensive and more powerful than the GLE 43, with perfectly bearable fuel consumption. And a hybrid makes increasing sense as traffic levels become ever more frustrating. But the GLE 43 is more agile, and 362 hp is still plenty of punch. It's one of those nice "developed-world" problems. Find a Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class for sale
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class comes as differently equipped versions according to the drivetrain.

Premium 3 has all the advanced safety equipment, such as adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, a 360-degree camera system and rear cross-traffic assist, plus a self-parking feature.
The GLE 550e 4Matic ($67,225) has the Premium 1 package as standard, along with leather upholstery and 19-in alloy wheels.

Many features are available in lower models that come standard at higher trim levels. Other options include a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a rear-seat entertainment system, a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound audio system and massaging front seats.
Cargo space is 38.2 cu ft. behind the rear seats and 80.3 cu ft. when they're folded down. That applies to the plug-in hybrid as well.

2017 Acura MDX -- Although the Acura badge won't measure up to the 3-pointed star in some people's minds, the MDX is a highly capable luxury SUV with reasonable pricing and a reputation for durability.
2017 BMW X5 -- The GLE's closest rival, with sharper handling and a bolder design. But it lacks the GLE's comfortable, relaxed driving experience.
2017 Lexus RX -- Offers much more distinctive styling than the GLE and driving dynamics that might considered sporty compared to those of older generations. It also has a long list of technology features and a reputation for excellent long-term reliability.
2017 Volvo XC90 -- Handsome and luxurious, the XC90 doesn't have any sporty variants, but there is a plug-in hybrid version.
