Hyundai Motor America took the wraps off its edgy 2012 Veloster this afternoon at the North American International Auto Show January 10 (today).

The front-wheel-drive sporty hatchback will come a direct-injection engine, a dual-clutched transmission, and get an estimated 40 miles to the gallon. The Veloster will also be equipped with Hyundai’s new Blue Link telematics connectivity system, just unveiled last week at the Computer Electronics Show.

The recently announced communication system, Blue Link, will be available on every Veloster model as well as all 2012 Sonatas.

The Veloster first appeared on the auto show circuit as a concept car in 2007 at the Seoul Motor Show, designed at Hyundai’s Korean design center in Namyang. Hyundai’s South Korean parent said Veloster, code named HND-3, was designed to cater to the tastes of the Generation Y, so the vehicle aims to take on Toyota’s Scion line.

Veloster also made it to other auto shows as a concept, including Los Angeles in 2007 and last year in Paris.

The Veloster has cool headlamps with LED running lights and appealing air intakes. It also has an akward-looking door configuration. In addition to the three passenger doors, the liftgate opens into the skylight, giving a bigger entry through the rear.

The Veloster goes on sale in the U.S. this summer and will be positioned under the Genesis coupe in Hyundai’s lineup.

The vehicle may have been the worst kept secret of the show, as Hyundai posted a teaser video on its You Tube channel before Christmas. Disguised Velosters were also caught on video in test drives along freeways and posted on YouTube since last summer by several alert industry watchers.
