2013 Acura RDX: Chicago Auto Show

  • Acura unveils the 2013 RDX at this year's Chicago Auto Show
  • The second generation of the RDX aims to improve power and efficiency
  • Expected to go on sale in late 2012

The 2013 RDX has a sleeker and more aerodynamic body, with the exterior changing from a sporty, compact SUV to a more substantial SUV. For 2013, the RDX has an elongated, more sculpted hood, giving it a sophisticated look to match Acura's philosophy of timeless, beautiful designs.

With a lower center of gravity, a wider track and longer wheelbase, the 2013 RDX handles even better than its road-hugging predecessor. The 2013 RDX will be available in both front- and all-wheel drive. New for 2013 is the Acura-exclusive "Amplitude Reactive Dampers" and a new Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering system that replaces the previous hydraulic steering setup.

Replacing the outgoing 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is a 3.5-liter V6 producing 273 horsepower. Bolted to the new V6 is a new feature for the RDX: a six-speed automatic transmission complete with a new lockup torque converter. Though bigger and more powerful, the new V6 is expected to achieve a better fuel economy rating - 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

The interior of the RDX meets or exceeds the level of quality Acura buyers have come to expect from the brand. Beyond the technical goodies like Pandora Radio, push-button start and navigation with voice recognition, buyers will find the 2013 RDX has larger door openings, more passenger room, increased cargo volume and an available power rear tailgate, making the RDX interior even more accommodating and flexible.

The 2013 Acura RDX is expected to go on sale and reach showrooms in fall of 2012.

What it means to you: As other automakers move away from normally aspirated V6s in favor smaller, turbocharged four-cylinder engines, Acura proves it goes its own way with the V6-powered 2013 RDX.
