Hi, and welcome to the 2013 North American International Auto Show. I’m Amanda Salas for AutoTrader, and let’s spend a couple of minutes looking into the future of the automobile with several daring concepts debuting here at the Cobo Center.
Acura debuted the next generation MDX SUV, a product that has helped to define the crossover category since its arrival in 2001. With styling described by Honda’s luxury division as “aero sculpture”, the next MDX will be longer, leaner, wearing a more aggressive front fascia, and steeply raked rear window. It’s expected the 2014 MDX will go into production looking much like the concept version that was received with enthusiasm at the Detroit show.
The Lincoln MKC concept is the first compact crossover to be built by Ford’s upscale subsidiary and the first vehicle to be designed by Max Wolff, formerly of Cadillac, the man behind the styling of the 2013 Cadillac XTS sedan. Now known as the Lincoln Motor Company, the prestige nameplate is going through a top-to-bottom retooling of its image and product lineup. Last year’s MKZ sedan will now be joined by the MKC crossover to rev up a new generation of Lincoln buyers. The MKC is due to go on sale later this year.
Toyota brought its Furia concept to Detroit and its unveiling was an event in itself, rolled out from behind a massive, transparent video wall designed by Samsung. The Furia is due to become the next-generation Toyota Corolla, the brand’s top-selling compact, which hasn’t received a significant revision since 2008. The Furia is a sleek, Euro-inspired compact with edgy styling accented by a smoothly integrated rear spoiler and LED taillights. It will be better equipped to take on such rivals as the Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, and Ford Focus when it eventually arrives in showrooms.
