  • New looks with sporty AMG influence
  • Completely redesigned interior
  • Diesel engine option coming in 2013

The Mercedes-Benz GLK was just launched in 2009, but the automaker is already giving it a refresh. Mercedes will show off an updated version of the small SUV at the New York Auto Show next week.

Changes outside are subtle and actually make the car blend in a bit more. The sharp edges that made the old GLK stand out in the segment have been softened and rounded out. The overall effect gives the GLK a more mature look. The new design brings the GLK more in line with the rest of Mercedes' SUV lineup, making it look like a small M-Class.

There are more changes to the interior, which also features stronger family ties. Like many other recent Mercedes models, the gearshift lever moved from the center console to the steering column. A revised dash sports new air vents, which look like they were poached from the exotic SLS.

While the new look is nice, the biggest news comes under the hood. For the first time since the GLK's launch, there will be two engine choices. The existing 3.5-liter V6 stays, but power has been bumped to 302 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. But the other engine option is the exciting part, because it's a 2.1-liter, 4-cylinder diesel. Although the diesel engine only has 190 hp, the 369 lb-ft of torque should really get things moving.

While Mercedes has yet to release fuel economy figures for the new diesel, they did drop a bit of bad news, saying the engine won't be available here until early next year. Still, it's good to see the company bringing another diesel engine stateside.

What it means to you: Mercedes-Benz's small SUV is getting revised looks, and (eventually) a new diesel engine option.
